@mikehanoo3 Im on the same page as you are, in the sense that I know there has to be change but it's not going to happen overnight. Using existing technologies on the proper scale in the right places will lead the way for cleaner and cleaner energy. Costa Rica makes 90% of it's electricity from renewable recourses (hydro power and geothermal) and the people of Samso Island, Denmark are now producing 10% more electricty than they use thanks to wind power. Petrolum still has uses.

@mikehanoo33 Changing the infrastructure to use only electric cars (Currently electric cars are dirtier then some hybrids depending on your state [what comes from your outlet is likely, mostly coal]) and using Nuclear power would be ideal. As far as waste disposal goes, Uranium gives off heat which could be used to self-propel it's decent into the earth's core avoiding any life-containing space completely. Where are we going to get the Uranium? There is a small portion in ALL Ocean water.

Human kind has moved onto fuel sources with progressively better ratios of carbon to hydrogen atoms wood at 10:1, coal at 2:1, oil at 1:2, natural gas at 1:4.Nuclear is your best bet, not plant fuels. Plant growth in an industrial scale causes negative affects due to nutrient runoff from fertilizers causing more harm then good.

@mikehanoo33 If you do some research it is more likely we will become carbon neutral, rather then re-tool the entire world for "green" forms of fuel that would cost massive amounts of dirty energy to restructure/produce. Effectively containing and recycling more co2 then we produce is the more likely solution. But that is all besides the point. Quit waiting for scientists to make a product to easily allow you to be green and take your own initiative to do so.

I know on 12 valves you can mix WVO with 8% gasoline and it runs fine, on my 96 i can got 22 mpg in the city as to 19, but a p-pumped truck is the only thing I'd do that with. I now have a duramax and run methanol lye bio and I do get about 1-2 less mpg but idc cuz its $.70 a gallon.

It really depends on how old the vehicles is and how often you've changed it prior to running B100. ie. I've noticed that people with Fords tend to have to change them more often than say Dodge owners. Chevy Duramax owners tend to have to change them even more often (because they have smaller micron ratings on their filters). Plan on changing it within the first 1,000 miles & maybe another 3,000 miles again down the road. But, carry one with you & know how to use it. -Graydon Blair, Utah Bio

Thanks for the video, my hubby is a FedEx ground driver and we would love to purchase a hybrid because he ( as a subcontractor) has to pay for the deisel in his truck (many dont know that with Fed ex ground). desparately looking how to lower the output of costs for fuel here lol Could this be done without much notice on a vehicle like that? Afterall it does haul some weight, so I would think it would, and then (ofcourse) the amount of biofuel needed would make it difficult to keep up huh?

You wouldn't use new Veg oil, cost too much. . Ethanol another topic, gas engines, USA makes it from CORN. It's a rip off. SUPPLY DEMAND, yes corn (food) cost go up. It's not quite true that Biodiesel can be used in any Diesel engine, you actually need to find very specific models to run without modification. Like 97-99 TDI Jettas or 01-03 TDI Golfs. The most important features you should look for are the injection system and the presence of some sort of preheating system. That being said, it's a brilliant fuel, much better than ethenol.

Ethanol is HORRIBLE. Growing CROPS just for fuel is expensive, makes food price soar. Takes MORE energy to make ethanol than you GET FROM IT! Only Farmers getting Fed subsitides to grow CRAP corn like it. Ethanol will not work in cold temp, holds more water & has less energy, MPG goes down. BIODIESEL works becaue it uses WASTE VEG OIL. Growing corn crops for fuel will not work. Brazil works because they use suger; suger cane grows like weeds there & energy out/in ratio is good. CORN=POOR.

It's not as basic and the methoxide equilibrium will be smaller and the reaction will be slower. the methanol has to be activated by the base for transesterification to occur. It has to be methoxide and not just adding lye to the oil, this would just make soap.

LYE or? croplandbiodieselcom faq html Potassium chloride, Potash an ingredient in fertilizers, safer (for both handler and the environment), does as good or better job. Also biodegradable, cheaper, easier to find. Feed store has Potash. We've used Potassium Chloride (potash) successfully in our Biodiesel and have found it safer and more cost effective than using Lye. We use 13.25 grams per gallon of Potash and 20% per gallon of methanol. It's also more environmentally friendly.

@neuralecho Chemistry is not that easy, especially organic chemistry. Compounds cannot be just simply "converted" by boiling or Distillation. The formula of glycerine is C3H5-(OH)3 the formula of methanol is CH3--OH. you can see that they are very different, glycerine contains 3 OH groups, methanol just one. There is no process i know for ripping the glycerine apart to form methanol. Also, that wouldnt be economical, cause glycerine is alot more expensive then MeOH (ca. 1,5-2 $ / l )

something wrong in your video: if the lye would be a catalyst it wouldnt get consumed in the process. Not being consumed in the chemical process is the definition of catalyst. The soap you recieve from the process is whats left of the NaOH. It combines with the oils and fats to form the sodium salts of palmitinic, stearic and oleic acids. These are what is commonly known as solid soap. Glycerine is just another alcohol.

Having studied bio diesel making a bit I wondered about that myself, and this is the reasons I came up with ; BD burns much cleaner then strait veggie oil, meaning a lot less carbon and sulphur emissions, also adds Ca 15% torque and is liquid at a much lower temp then veggie oil

I don't get the point of the methanol and lye. My friends (1) filter the oil, (2) fill a water heater, (3) heat the oil until it separates out the gunk, and (4) filter it as it is being filled into the tank in the back of his pickup. 1996 Dodge one ton dually gets over 20 mpg on veggie oil and 25 isn't uncommon. They run a heater hose thru the tank to keep the oil warm and change filters more frequently. Also installed a new fuel pump. The exhaust is colorless and smells like french fries.

CRD pressures are much higher than that. They are near 30,000. The fuel does have to be refined more because they orifices in the injectors are much smaller. They use small orifices and high pressure to get better atomization. I will tell anyone that does this to change their fuel filter after a couple hundred miles. The increased solvent properties of biodiesel clean out the fuel system and deposit all the gunk in the filter.

Yeah, I don't see why all this is nessecary. The whole point of the biodiesel is that it's supposed to be free and easy? I've seen people just filter the vegetable oil and put it in the tank, so why all the extra trouble? The only thing is what he said in the video, in the winter time, you can't run this stuff straight because it will turn to sludge that will be too thick to suck through the fuel lines. So you run 50\50 with diesel at the pump in the winter time, it still saves you money.

love how he had to prove something that's a 100 yrs old. 60% to 70% better milage is an exaggeration. 25% realistically, but you can twist the numbers and come up with 50%, but that is not really apples and apples. With that said I am a fan of Diesel and even making bio-diesel but there are potential problems with COKING in injectors. VW TDI only approves of 5% Bio-diesel to 95% petrol diesel or the warranty is void. Just be aware and don't swallow the disciples hype hook & line. There are cons.

That's because there aren't many places that offer them due to lack of infrastructure. At least you can make your own biodiesel, but that requires effort that some may not be willing to put forth as well as space for equipment that some may not have. And, it seems, the best way to deal with the fuel problem is to find more oil from untapped sites to stabilize the market while engaging in strong initiatives to begin a gradual changeover to carbon neutral fuels.

BTW the GM versions of all the light truck gas and diesel trucks/vans get better mileage than their counterparts including the japenese. The Isuzu diesel and Vortec V-8 motors are the best in the business for their SFC.

Many who get alt fuel vehicles actually rarely run them on the alt fuel. Like E85. I agree on the TDI, I'm waiting for the Diesel Honda Minivan in '09. There's a BMW in the EU that might be brought into the USA, but all these vehicles have all sorts of junk on them to clean the exhaust that Biodiesel only cars don't need .

1. Of course you have to run it on biodiesel to get its benefits! It's not like the fuel works just sitting in a can doing nothing. What, pray tell, was your point in bringing up the obvious? 2. For its size, a diesel model gets decent MPG: 18 avg. Note that I say "for its size" and I agree that trucks like this are appropriate if you need them. Otherwise, reap the benefits of diesel with a Volkswagen Golf TDI over gas hybrids.

Biodiesel isn't new (it was developed in the 1970s). As the film says, biodiesel does improve performance and reliability in addition to being green. Another biodiesel point: you can drive a diesel-powered Ford Excursion and manage superior emissions over a Toyota Prius. Just mention "biodiesel" when some jerk complains that you're hurting the environment with your SUV. The obstacle: there doesn't exist a comprehensive infrastructure that supports this fuel. That may change in the future.

just wanted to add cutting barrels is the number one reason construction workers die. all barrels should be consider dangerous, as companys sometimes don't use new barrels they recyle them the way they are formed they can trap fuel in the lip of the barrel. so even if you have a barrel that is labled it might have had something else in it. or other have used the barrel for waste ect. just to let everyone know that working on a barell becuase it is cheap might kill you. seek a profestional

I work for a large trucking company and the problems we ran into with biodiesel is that we tried to run 10% biodiesel and what happened was our gas mileage went from 2.6 mpg to 2.2 mpg, so it wasn't doing any good for us.

@3ddonovan Guys like me who burn vegetable oil as fuel need to change the engine oil more often because the vegetable oil combustion in the cylinder mixes slightly with engine oil and that contaminated engine oil first attacks the valves! The chemistry between vegetable based oil and crude based oil is very different when it comes to lubrication of metals and longevity of that lubrication property! I bet if you are still driving your car with veg. oil as the lubrication of motor oil you have added a 10,000 miles of wear and tear for every mile you drove down the street.

What roll does that tiny solar panel play in this? I can tell you it does NOTHING. eberspacher take a heavy current for about 60sec on startup (glow plug) and that is repeated on shutdown to burnout access fuel. I suspect that sized solar panel would have to connected for several months of average British sun exposure to come close to ever recharging the hit from one eberspacher start up/shutdown cycle.

Normally these devices are installed with intake silencers and exhaust systems. They're also usually run the other way up (exhaust pointing down) - hence the smoking. You're right. Agricultural land should be used to grow food, not fuel sources, especially considering the almost constant food crisis in the world. However, algae is a viable biodiesel source and can be used to sequester CO2, purify waste water, and provide a fertilizer at the end of it all. The future of transportation will not include either bioethanol of biodiesel due to the incredible areas of ground that is needed to grow the feedstock. With the larger injection pumps found on the older 300d Mercedes diesels (w123) you can get away with no real separation methods involving chemicals. Its rather let it settle in a larger 55 gallon drum, filter bags 10 micron, pumped down and filtered into the car at 5 micron. With the car set-up properly, filtering, its that easy. No chemicals. Its the smaller injection pumps that have trouble pumping the thicker parts of the WVO. Have a 78 300D in the works over here.

Obviously you do not not understand biodiesel. Most biodiesel is made from recycled oil. Also, you omit that many farmers are paid NOT to grow certain crops. try a 50% bio blend with 50% petro diesel. I have also heard that canola oil is pretty good for winter blends, but it might just be a rumor. And dont try to buy something labeled as a "anti-gelling" additive. none of them work for biodiesel that well. Whatever you do, stick a sample of your blend in the freezer overnight to make sure it will work. if any wax forms, dont use it.

it was made by Fuel Meister they of course were forced out of business by this free country of ours. really the easiest thing to get are the containers. depending on how large of a scale you are going to be making fuel. i can make 120 gallons a day with mine its considered medium scale. i have 2 55 gallon drain tanks and 2 275 gallon holding tanks for the raw oil a few 55 gal drums to hold fuel. this system can be home made but will be VERY hard to duplicate the mixing cap.....

most diesels have glow plugs, but only use them to start the engine. Once the engine starts the glow are not needed. Larger diesel engine like those in locomotives do not require glow plugs because of the air volume and compression ratio... Biodiesel is actually more combustible (SP?) than diesel.

You need to look around for "race shops", "speed shops", etc. Methanol is racing fuel, and many speed / race stores, drag strips, etc. carry it. They will generally sell it by the gallon, or by the 55 gallon drum. Don't know where in NJ you are, but these types of stores are pretty common around the country.

Well I live in new jersey, I was looking for prices in the internet but prices for meth runs about $15 per gal. I also got the meth. on walmart (HEET you know the antifreeze) but the bottle cost 355ml = $1.30 soo with those prices there is not savings for me. does anybody knows a better place to get it cheaper? thanks upupaepops for replying.

Where are you located? Here in the US, methanol is very common at race shops. It's averaging a little over $4 US per gallon in small quantities (less in large bulk purchases). Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) runs about $65 US for a 55 pound bag. At those prices, assuming your waste oil is free, the finished product will cost you a little over $1 US per gallon.

ok what is the deal? to make 50 gal of bio-d you need 10 gal of methanol plus potassium hidroxide. just methanol cost about $15.00 p/gal and here you need 10 gal of meth., that would be $150.00. at the end you get bio-d at $3.00 per gal. how much you get the methanol? or is it free?. and you just pay for the potas. hidrox. ? nmmmmmm I need some help with this.

The nice thing about the BioPro products is that they can process some really "bad" waste veg oils. They use a two-step process, the first of which is the esterification (or Acid) process where sulfuric acid attacks the free fatty acids and modifies them so that the methanol can attach and create the bioD. Then the transesterification stage (Base) stage takes place, making the bioD. This is why the BioPro products are so great.

You do not have to use methanol, you can make biodiesel with ethanol too. If you use MORE than 10,000 pounds of methanol a year you are supposed to report it to the federal government and comply with local fire codes...which are all but ridiculous in most cases.

we make the stuff for 96 cents a gallon and then we get a 50 cent per gallon tax credit for refurbishing the oil in our state. So it costs us about 50 cents a gallon to make the stuff. That is after factoring in the cost of the chemicles. We have another video coming out in a few days where we use a machine that makes it for us at 100 gallons of fuel at a time. Watch for it. The machine does everything for you.

i agree with tpvalley on this, just a note for you, diesel prices in the UK at the moment is £5.22 a gallon (4.54 litres) thats approx $10.58 at present exchange rate and this is why a lot of people use WVO or SVO as this works out easier and cheaper than using all these chemicals

Living in Minnesota, we know all to well about ethanol and bio-diesel. Ethanol has been 10% of our gasoline since the early 90's! We all know that the stuff is BAD! less energy per gallon, requires 0.9 gallons of gasoline and about 30 gallons of precious fresh water, to make 1 gallon of ethanol. The plants STINK. Ethanol and biodiesel aren't the same thing. Biodiesel has methyl and ethyl chains and can be made from vegetable oils or animal fats. Algae can even be turned in to biodiesel. Today most biodiesel (85%) is made in the EU, not the US, so the subsidy angle is a bit overplayed. Biofuels are best when they come from recycled material. And they are only part of the solution. Nevertheless, using land that can be used for food crops for fuel is dumb.

And hemp is a product of cannabis, which has many forms and classifications cannabis sativa is just one. there are cannabis seeds in bird seed, do you think you could grow pot with thc from those seeds? NO it is capable to do either, which makes it versatile, but in most states, hemp is a weed, and grows wild. so scientists can call it what they want, but it IS a form of a weed.

ya, but hemp is a weed. cannabis has the extra gene that creates thc, and really doesnt grow wild, like hemp, so it is a bit different. i think they must smoke, and often use the word weed, i dont think they were being scientific.

The word isn't weed. The word is cannabis, and although this car is running from hemp; cannabis can produce more oil than hemp. Therefore more biofuel, and think of the other super strains of cannabis that have more resin!

You are absolutely correct about methanol. What you are missing is that the issue you are mentioning can be avoided by working in a well ventilated area. I have never had an issue, but continue to be very careful.

Most countries does not allow sale of methanol to the public since it is very toxic and extremely flamable. One static spark is enough to ignite it and it burns with an invisible flame so you are not able to see it burn, you only see the flame when it spreads to other materials. Due to this accidents with methanol tend to be serious. It should be treated with way way more care than in any video I have seen on youtube so far.

Not to be a dick but I would have liked to have seen glasses on when working with the lye. One sneeze and ya coulda gone blind lol. Great video. The more people are able to see on great sites like YT just how easy it is, maybe the more people will get involved and bring the cost of both materials used (methanol for instance) and other fuels (gasoline, diesel fuel) down and stabilize the economy a bit more. Supply and demand. Less need for petroleum-based fuels, the cheaper it becomes.

In this particualr example, I am using used vegetable oil. Yes it matters if you are using new or used oil in only that you are going to need more lye for used oil. No metal tank os needed and yes you could put it straight into the tank provided of course it is for a diesel engine. You do not need an extra kit. At cold temperatures, I have had no issues with gelling, but viscosity does increase so flow restriction through filters has been an issue only in high biodiesel ratios.

are you using waste vege oil or brand new vege oil, does it even matter? so by using this formula and adding all that stuff, you can put it directly into your gas tank with no heat cables and it won't gel or cause any problems in the cold? do you need a metal tank? do you need to buy a 2000 kit still or do you only need the kit when you put vege oil straight in it? thanks

It is possible and it requires the vehicle to have a heater in the system and a tank just with regular diesel. As you know, oil hardens in cold temperatures, and if the vehicle is turned off with oil in the system, the following day the injectors, fuel lines, injection pump could be plugged. With biodiesel no additional equipment is needed.

Lye is the name given to NaOH or KOH. Call Westco at 323-877-0077 and see if that helps you. It is very important you used the right chemicals at the correct purities. Again, titrate on pure vegetable oil to make sure you are doing it right.
