Actually Dogpatch closed in the mid 90s, not the 80s. The park was spectacular before it changed hands the final time. The "store" you talk about being the only thing there was actually the ticket office. You had to take the finicular down the hill to get to the park. I suppose you never actually got to the park itself.

No it was not a horrible idea. Considering this place brought many people happy memories it was a very good idea. It also lasted longer than several other smaller amusement parks. Dogpatch was a success for a good amount of time but the ownership changes brought its profits to a standstill because the new owners were older and didn't invest as much as they should have.

Even with a capital injection it will never be the same... what kid today is even going to be familiar with the Dogpatch characters? What about the resort above the park is that operating

Dogpatch opened on May 18, 1968 when I was eleven years old. The news, and my folks, had talked up the park so much that I pushed for us to get there as soon as we could, so we drove down from Warrensburg, Mo on May 25 - one week after it opened. I still have some photos and souvenirs from that trip. I don't remember us ever going again, but it was still sad to see something that everyone had so much hope for back then, end up like this.

when i was about 5 years old my parents went there to see Bachman Turner Overdrive in the late 80s. I remember it was a loud show, but it was during the day so my mom took me down to go on the paddle boats while dad enjoyed the show. we moved out of state, but i've always remembered the park, especially driving the Model T cars on that one ride.
