Cool project! Instead of batteries to store power which wear out why not try fuel cells. Also from your video it sounded like you had AC to DC to AC which seems pretty lossy. Better to do it just DC to AC.

It is not 120 Volts amplitude or 240V peak to peak. It is 120 Volts RMS which is 120V divided by the square root of two. It is actually about 170 Volts peak to peak. Good Vid anyway.

The Puerto Rican Water Company is one of the largest users of electricity in Puerto Rico. Water does not move by itself through pipes or purification plants. It requires electricity to operate pumps and other equipment. The water company has been looking into renewable sources for some of its electrical needs. duh

@tanya2horses It is theoretically possible to change the ocean currents if the thermal balance is changed. However, the change due to OTEC will be very much less than the changes occurring from natural upwelling. Furthermore, monitoring of the initial thousand or so units will permit modeling that could predict any major changes. Any effects could be reversed by simply shutting down units as they get to the end of their life or sooner if it was required.

DHow do you ever come to the conclusion Walter that this type of generation of energy would stuff up the natural heat distribution of the ocean. All it is really is a gigantic float that simply has an internal system just as a human body does. But a human body or large metal one will not change the oceans heat distributions.

I have been trying to get Puerto Rico to support this for the past 5 years. It now seems likely that it will be developed in Hawaii. A 10 MW Pilot plant is planned by Lockheed Martin for operatin in about 3 years with 100 MW units several years later. The cost will be about twice what we estimated but it is likely to come to pass. Some jobs may come to Puerto Rico, but Puerto Rico will be a customer rather than a leader.

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately it has been very difficult to obtain support. Even to obtain an order for the electricity (a Power Purchase Agreement). Once a unit is working, it is likely to provide inexpensive renewable energy outside the control of large firms or Governments.

Methinks these numbers are quite a bit inflated. These plants are very inefficient and the mass flow rates required through the heat exchangers are huge. It could play its part though if the plants could be built cheaply.

Integrate a solar ammonia system on panels back so the panel can take the concentrated light of a dish on a smaller panel I bet if you remove the heat effectively you will have the ability to improve efficiency to the level of added light. There by reducing the cost of the solar panel by making its gain greater. This system would make it cost effective to add a tracking system if gain were increased. The panel would have to be modified to deliver the output it would need a large guage wire.

Cool these panels send this warm temp around or into these batteries. Since solar panels produce better at peak times if the heat is removed we can improve efficiency of panels 15% just with this method. Look at developing nations they seem to get by just on charcoal we need to help those that are on the charcoal system providing solar panels and cookers for these that will take the time to use it. Putting charcoal to nighttime use would greatly reduce greenhouse by allowing reforestation.

Is there a way to include a steam in todays wind generators so on days when we have relative little wind the sun is beaming on the steam generator pushing the rear of the wind turbine. Massive batteries can be constructed using wells into the ground coated with plastic and plates& liquid added. This would greatly reduce the cost of huge banks of batteries. These batteries would maintain a constant temp regulated by chosen depth lessening maintenance. Place these in the shade of solar panels.

Why don't we use a hybrid of sorts with the solar cell some alcohol or other hydrocarbon. The way this works is we get dc from the panel then apply this to water with some hydrogen peroxide to produce browns gas mixed with the hydrocarbon we can fire the browns gas to power turbine with steam. Homes need to be built to use the sun as efficiently as possible refrigerators need to lie on their backs and should be vented depending upon the season light needs to be solar fiber optic delivery.

@hachicontrol There are a number of ways to deal with this. You can use pump reservoirs, like the ones shown in this video. You could, in theory, use the excess to drive electrolysis to produce hydrogen for storage and later combustion, which is less efficient but might be easier to arrange than a lot of pump reservoirs. Finally, you can disconnect turbines from the grid and lock them.

I think its better to place all 3 system together in every chosen location. Lets say when its too cloudy for the solar cells below, the wind turbine besides it will turn because cloudy days are usually windy. As for the biomass at the same location can provide the supply slack from wind & solar. Its easier to coodinate its supply at any given location. The high tech hydro system will be the storage for night electricity combined with night wind. Please comment. TQ

Nevertheless, these are just speculations and thus far, unproven. Perhaps our only answer will be seen on the years they say 100% power is from these powerplants, say year 2200?

some speculation is that methane produced in bio-digester is carbon emit free. Other gases however are stored in different tanks to be used in their own way. How about the fertilizer? These can be used freely on farms with minimal impact in soil-microbes ration because as i have read in agri journal fertilizers from bio-digester are cleaner and less toxic than synthetic ones (high nitrogen content). Sludge is also accounted for because there is non produced in biogas plants.

I think there are a lot of flaws in the multi plant system but not so much that they cannot try and solve it. Even with the loss of energy in transit to other parts of the country the system has to operate to produce even at the least amount of energy. The question is with solar and power on a non permanent stay, can biogas serve it's total energy production for the whole nation on it's own and what effects can very large scale plant system have on the environemnt.

That said, I've also read that tropical rainforests aren't the "lungs" we usually think they - produce an incredible amount of C02 in decaying undergrowth. So there's absolutely no shortage of resources.

I was really just speculating on whether the video is neglecting to address any flaws in the idea. Energy lost in transit is one, but also I've heard that in the US we'd have to use an incedible amount of land to make biofuels a big portion of our CURRENT consumption. That said, biofuels also take up food farming land, and replace forests. As it would in Africa, which is starving.

(If Solar energy is comes from the South, when wind is minimal in the North, a fair amount of that solar energy will be lost in transit to the North. Also, a lot of energy will have to travel far into the urban areas.) The strength of this idea is plant coordination.. seems fairly simple. Did no one really think of or test it yet? I'm surprised we haven't heard more about it. In either case, maybe its success is being silenced, still too unproven, or the video is not mentioning ideas faults.

This is really interesting. Article is short on hard data though. Couple questions to ask.. - How will large biomass needs impact food supply & costs? If its still true that France is the only Euro country able to feed itself, Germany's cheap biofuel relies on cheap food imports. - The model is a 1/10k representation of Germany's actual needs. Does the land utilized also represent 1 ten thousandth of Germany's available land? - Is the model accounting for energy lost in transit?

I like this -- I don't care how much of a "purist" a person is...they are living their lives off the grid and I'm NOT. They made their choice to do what was needed to be debt-free, and I haven't gotten there YET. I applaud them. Unfortunately due to government subsidies and major corporations buying patents to block the further development of renewable energy the market forces have not had a chance to work to bring down the prices on alot of solar, geo-thermal, and wind power. I think the fact that they haven't "altered their way of life in any way shape or form" is the very point that they are making. The ability to stop wasting natural resources and continue to enjoy the amenities of on-the-grid living is a reality. I don't think it matters whether you have the ability to purchase it outright or put it together as you go. What matters is that people like this, cash-purchase or do-it-yourself, are having a positive impact on the planet on which we live.

I believe they would have to hard-line them to the surface, which could really cause some logistical nightmares for these things. The mechanical energy is converted into electricity through those coils you see in the vid. I think they are wrapped around a magnet, and as they move, they generate a current by moving through the magnetic field. Like how a solenoid works, but just opposite kind of haha.

Yeah, but it's cancelled out because a boiler system will have a similar carbon cost from production, but the boiler system will last around 2 times longer so it won't need to be replaced as much so it kinda halfs that approximately. So it's not just extra. Although boiler systems will have a smaller carbon cost, this should reduce as this technology takes off and is built in bulk and more economically viable and blah blah blah..

just curious, how much energy is required to build a single solar panel or vac tube? therefore, how long does that device have to work to provide a feasible returns equal to its construction? days weeks months years? if it takes 5 years worth of energy to construct it, and twenty serviceable years, it really only has a 15 year cost recovery. Gas is just indirect solar. And it won't be cheap for much longer unless you're willing to go dig up methane clathrates from the sea floor.
