Wow, love how this building gets a lot of hype b/c it's in NYC, as if no other city is doing this. Philly's Comcast Center is an LEED certified green building, and when Philly's American Commerce Center is completed it will be the tallest green building in the world at 1500 feet.

I sort of remember having a conversation with a friend about piezoelectricity back before any of us even knew the term actually existed (let alone the technology). She wanted to buy up a bunch of old Nintendo power pads and splice them together to create a power producing dancefloor. How should I go about macgyvering together a working prototype like this?

This is the recovery of energy that would otherwise go to waste. If they were normal floors, the vibrations would have absorbed into the floor and into the foundation. If there was a cheap and easy way to recover all wasted energy/heat the world would be so much better off. Cars put out waste heat through their radiators; light bulbs (even CFLs) put out wasted heat. So no, this isn't free energy...

Great video. Ostrom's work is much richer and has more profound implications than I originally thought. Having said this, there is a little error in this video. The top of the curve (mentioned at 2.23) is not the equilibrium point (if it was there would be no problem). It's the efficient point.

Also Frost Heave can only happen when there is water present to freeze below level ground. Correctly built E-ships use water barriers layered in the bearming to prevent that. Building in Permafrost might be another case altogether, so when you say Northern climate I have to agree with wavryder6ft that Taos County is not exactly the tropics in Winter! We just went thru a spell of 20 belows at night. No frost heaving at my place that I could see.

There's toxins in the air, in the public water, the food either has hormones or is genetically modified for the most part. Its all true, look it up. The most humane way I know of is what Richard Heinberg advocates: powering down. Using far, far less while we find replacements. He proposes an Oil Depletion protocol so the world powers down in unison, keeping prices stable. Far more humane than continuing battles over this resource.

Would it be possible to link current US foreign policy to the threat faced by peak oil rather than the threat faced by elusive terrorists ? Or am I being too cynical ? Isn't it ironic that the US army needs a steady stream of oil in order to wage wars to secure yet more oil for the US. Is there not a more humane way of breaking the cycle ?

Do you guys have any idea what is going on in Bristol Bay? A proposed mine is under consideration in direct proximity of a lake that sustains the fishery. If this mine is implemented, serious consequences to the fishery would prevail. Bristol Bay is currently the largest salmon run in the world, and is virtually untouched by human intervention. If anybody cares about sustainability and the fishery, you should be aware of the Pebble Mine.

Just think consuming fish is very bad for your health nowadays because of the pollution humankind causes, fish is full with PCB's. Sorry but I stopped consuming fish, even tough there is sustainable fising going on. I would stop fishing if I was a fisher knowing what I know now. The oceans are getting killed and I've taken my responsibility so I became a vegetariën.
